Fashion – The Impractical

This may sound a bit weird coming from a ‘woman’ but I’m sure loads of ‘women’ out there will agree with me that fashion for women is sometimes way too impractical and goes beyond nuisance.

Only this Eid I figured that sometimes we go to extremes trying to look our most sophisticated and in the end we end up being uncomfortable. My biggest worry these days are shoes. I am very choosy with them. I won’t pick anything that’s not flexible, I want something that is tied, zipped or closed from behind. I hate it when my feet slip driving! And obviously you don’t get this combination in female shoes! Really most of what women sections hold are sandals with heals high and sharp enough  to puncture holes thru the bottom of your car, or some of those shoes have such inflexible soles that I might as well drive like Mr. Bean with a brick! Then there is the problem of the gaudy flashy stones that you are terrified to wear coz the thousands you’ve spent on the stick stones that the guy sold to you saying was ‘synthetic gem’ (that sounds really impressionable to some less educated women here – and how take pride in repeating that to anyone and everyone) might come off.

My theory is one should wear shoes that are comfortable, practical and should look good – now the possibility of looking good for women is infinite…

My second worry happens to be the clothes itself. Though, there, one does have the option of actually fixing things their own way. If they are uncomfortable with a certain material, color, design it can all be changed. But there too we are kind of restricted by what’s in. for instance churidars are all in these days but if you don’t ask your grandmother to do them and instead give it to your tailor, he’ll create something that will make you comfortable in one position only and that is standing! You may not be able to sit with your legs folded!

That was my exact fate for a Mehndi I was attending. Everything was perfect for me that day, my hair, my clothes, my make-up and my accessories only the seating arrangement wasn’t exactly what I had hoped for. Imagine me trying to sit down with a TIGHT churidar on the floor! Uff I know! Well I stubbornly picked out an elevated corner and sat there, and while everyone though I was snobbish and high on attitude they repeatedly asked me to join them DOWN THERE I told them honestly what the problem was. It did give them a chance to giggle so I’m glad I made someone’s day that way! But hell no! The only churidar I was ever comfortable in was the one granny had made for me.

At times really when I go shopping, there are so many annoying things that I see people by and be happy about. I wonder what sort of lives these guys live if they can by georgette in summer and wear them showing off? Or maybe women just tend to be blind they race to look good better than her and in their race to follow trends they forget their own comfort!
